Strategies for visual communication
Clive Kerr
Simon Ford
Institute for Manufacturing

Visual representation improves understanding and communication of complex concepts. Well-known examples include graphs and pie charts for quantified data, roadmaps and portfolio matrices for strategy and innovation, and diagrammatic frameworks for research topics. This workshop will cover principles and practice of visual design with an opportunity to critique good and bad examples. The aim is to provide participants with knowledge and skills that can be applied in their own research fields.

Creative thinking for problem solving
Natacha Wilson
Graduate Development
Centre for Personal and Professional Development

Our complex and demanding research environment requires us to develop strong
problem solving skills. Our natural talent and preferred mode of thinking
often relies on logical and analytical thinking - but it is not always
sufficient in helping us deal with the challenges we face.

In this highly participative workshop, you will get the opportunity to
explore how creative thinking skills can help you solve problems.

In the workshop, we will

  • identify the factors that influence our ability to think
    creatively
  • identify a range of creative problem solving techniques

  • explore and use Edward de Bono creative thinking tools (Six
    Thinking Hats)

"To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a
new angle requires a creative imagination and marks the real advances in
science" - Albert Einstein

Do I want to be an Entrepreneur?
Peter Hiscocks
Judge Business School

This
workshop will consider the idea of setting up and running your own
business – or joining a newly established business venture. What
are the different options for scientists and engineers and what is
involved in entrepreneurship?

The workshop will
address the key elements of setting up a new business venture, what
you need to consider, what you need to do, where you will find
funding for a new business venture and any of the other issues that
may concern people thinking about this as a career option – for now
or for the future.
