I implemented a local linear stability analysis to examine a range of
swirling shear flows. The aims of this project are to better understand
the origins of vortex breakdown and to evaluate the limitations of
local linear stability analysis. Absolute and convective instabilities
present further insight into the instability characteristics of a flow
not easily available from global stability analysis. However, I also
show that the accuracy of local stability analysis is limited when
applied to quickly evolving flows by drawing comparisons with results
from the global analysis.
