Fuel injectors, commonly, use swirl to enhance
mixing. Vortex breakdown is a common feature in such swirling flows. Previous
studies have established that the initial breakdown is steady and axisymmetric
but an unsteady spiralling breakdown mode develops on top of this, due to a
region of absolute instability. The steady axisymmetric breakdown is studied
using a linear global stability framework. The results from the global
stability analysis are then used to map the regions of the flow that are most
sensitive to external forcing and internal feedback.
